Before I start this week’s Blog it should be noted that 72 years ago today August 24th The Niners Played their first ever game. A Preseason game V.S. the la dons.
This week the Niners go to indianapolis to play our third Preseason game. The third Preseason game is the one where the starters usually play the most. In his last press conference before the game Kyle Shanahan said “We would like the starters to play the first half”. That includes Richard Sherman who will be making his Niners debut on Saturday. Speaking of debuts Arik Armstead will be making his preseason debut after finally being able to practice this week after he suffered a hamstring injury earlier in training camp. Malcolm Smith will return to action along with Solomon Thomas for the first time since both players got hurt against the cry girls. Garry Gilliam did not progress to the next level of the concussion protocol this week so he has been ruled out. K’Waun Williams will be a game time diction. There were plenty of bright spots in last week’s lost to the houston texans. Jimmy G Cool was 10-12 for 136 yards and a TD. And First round pick Mike McGlinchey has allowed no QB pressures in 26 Passing Blocking snaps. Considering that his Pass Blocking was looked as something he needed to improve on that stat right there is encouraging. The Run Blocking for the second game in a row opened no running lanes for our Running Backs and Our Pass Rush failed to produce a sack and only had 3 QB hits all game. Since this is the final time we will see any starters till most likely Week 1 in minnesota when it starts to count here is final Preseason Preview.
- Open Up Run Lanes
It seems to me that every week I seem to put this as one of the things I want to see for the starting O-Line. A lot of Kyle Shanahan’s offence depends on being able to throw deep of play action. Without the threat of a Run game the play action will fail and hence our offence will fail. The Niners made it a priority to upgrade our O-Line this offseason. I understand it’s going to take time for the O-Line to gel and get used to playing with each other, but it’s time to see some progress since this is the last time they will play before Week 1.
- Harass the Opposing QB
The Niners Pass Rush has been nonexistent pretty much since Aldon Smith got cut from the Niners. If we want any shot of winning the NFC West this year our Pass Rush must harass opposing QB’s. We all know what wilson has been able to do to the Niners with his ability to uses his legs. A good showing by the Pass Rush Saturday will go a long way in calming our nerves.
- For The Love Of God Don’t Get Hurt
The Niners have had their fair share of injury scares this Preseason. Last week we lost Erik Magnuson for at least 6 weeks and Joe Williams for what’s been said to be a while. The Niners don’t need any more injuries this close to the Regular Season.
- Win
Every week this Preseason I have said that I want my team to win. I understand that the overall objective is to get reps evaluate your roster and get out healthy. But I have the highest standard when it comes to this Football Team. Every time the Niners step on that field I expect us to win and I want players and coaches to feel the same way!!!!!
