The New York Knickerbockers have kicked off the 2016-17 season, and the results are not pretty. Having started out the season 2-3 with one garden shower of boos. As the media and Frank Isloa try to figure out what the Knicks need, I believe the answer is clear-cut. The Knicks need a lesson in chemistry not in geometry.
The triangle keeps getting brought up but the last time I checked the Knicks do not play triangle defense. The offense will come, however the defensive issues are a huge concern. As the team has had stretches were they do not defend at all, the Knicks are currently ranked 25th in opponents points per game (according to nba.com).
The defense is something that can be rectified thru hustle and communication. A great defense team has great communication thus they have great chemistry. Chemistry is something that develops with time. Time is something Knicks fans are not used to having, nor is the media. Patience not panick is the key to the Knicks.
Remember the Miami Heat struggled to inter-great their big 3. They stumbled out of the gate with a 9-8 record. Their struggles continued in the NBA finals were the Heat lost to the Mavericks. The Heat should have steamrolled thru the Dallas Mavericks but the chemistry was still a work in progress.
The 2016 Knicks are not the 2011 Miami Heat but they may be going thru the same struggles. Putting together three new players to your starting five takes time. Not to mention the Knicks are all learning a new system. Also throw in the fact that their starting five played ZERO minutes together in the pre-season and you can see why they might have chemistry issues.
However winning cures all woes, with a huge win against the bulls the club has seemed to ease up.
“I’m just happy we got the win”- Rose
“I’m not gonna lie to you, It felt great.”-Noah
“When you lose a couple of games early you need a game like this to turn it around”- Hornacek
Once the Knicks get close to the 20 game mark we shoud have a better idea of the idenity of this club. Lets get one thing clear the Knicks will never be an elite defense team. They don’t have the players to reach those hieghts, however with some more communication and hustle they can be a middle of the pack defesive team.
