The summer Olympics are here again and things have been going well for the United States. One person, in particular, is setting its eyes on more than just winning gold but being the greatest of all time.

I am sure you all have heard that name before this year’s Olympic games. He has made new headlines for being caught smoking marijuana and also for the birth of his son Boomer. He also has retired from swimming before, just to returned in 2015 because he wanted to help the United States win gold again. The more important news on him is that he has won his twenty-first gold medal in the Olympics. This is unheard of in this day and age with all the training and new technology to help keep athletes healthy. He is doing it with ease and there is nobody in his way to stop him.

He came in first place in the men’s 4x200m relay to win gold with his teammates. On the individual side, he has won the men’s individual 200m butterfly which gave him his 21st gold medal. He still has five events to race in this year’s Olympics which he could win a gold medal in each. If he does go on to win gold in all of those races that will add to his lead for the already Olympic record and make it harder for someone else to ever break that record.

What Phelps is doing is something that has never been seen before in the sport. He is winning and crushing his opponents. Critics don’t want to give him his due because he was convicted of driving under the influence at the age of 19 and he was caught smoking marijuana on camera. My take is he is living his life and nobody is perfect. He trains well and he is still winning. Marijuana in my eyes is a recreational drug and not one of those hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Phelps does have ADHD so maybe the marijuana helps him to focus and channel the extra energy he has.

His critics even tried to say he was using banned substances and that was the reason he was winning so much. Phelps responded by volunteering to be tested for banned substances, he passed every test. It’s time to give it up to him, this is his god given talent that he is blessed with and let’s just appreciate his greatness because athletes like him do not come around very often.
