A Look at the Battleground

Tonight, WWE will be hosting WWE Battleground at 8 pm ET. It is held at the Verizon Center in Washington DC and is the fourth Battleground PPV. This is the first PPV after the WWE brand split and will feature eight matches with an additional on the pre-show. The kickoff will begin at 7 pm.

On the pre show, we have:

The Usos (Jimmy and Jay Uso) vs. Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango)
This match was announced two days ago on the WWE website and is completely irrelevant just like every other pre show matches.

The main show will be (not necessarily in the following order):

Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
These two men have had a long history as friends before they entered into NXT (the WWE developmental brand). Zayn debuted first and soon after won the NXT Championship from Adrian Neville. As Zayn was victorious, Owens debuted and surprised Zayn with a vicious attack, injuring Zayn for many months. Zayn returned at the Royal Rumble in 2016 and eliminated Owens. Since then, they have fought at Payback (Owens victory) and have been involved, together, in a ladder match for the Intercontinental Title at Wrestlemania 32 and in the Money in the Bank ladder match.

John Cena, Enzo & Cass vs. The Club (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson)
During the Extreme Rules match between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles, the Usos interfered on Reigns’ behalf. The Club came out and fought the Usos off. This distraction led to Styles being pinned. The following night on Raw, Styles verbally broke up with Gallows and Anderson and it looked like the Club was done. The following week, John Cena returned from a legitimate shoulder injury. Styles and Cena looked like they were going to square each other up before the Club came out and looked to attack Cena and Styles. However, Styles ‘turned’ on Cena and the three proceeded to give Cena a beat-down. In the following weeks, this will continue to happen before Enzo & Cass stopped an attack. The three became a team and a match was announced for Battleground.

Becky Lynch vs. Natalya
The story starts at the WWE Network event Roadblock. Natalya accompanied by her uncle Bret Hart challenged then Divas Champion Charlotte to a match later that night. She accepted but Natalya was unsuccessful. Charlotte won the match for the new Women’s Championship at Wrestlemania in a Triple Threat Match against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch. After Wrestlemania, Charlotte and Natalya feuded for the Women’s Championship. This resulted in a submission match at Payback. Charlotte locked Natalya in the Sharpshooter (which was Natalya’s move). The referee, Charles Robinson, stopped the match even though Natalya didn’t tap out. Although this was fixed, it mirrored the Montreal Screwjob 19 years ago when Shawn Michaels ‘tapped out’ Bret Hart (Natalya’s uncle) with the Sharpshooter. This led to a rematch on Raw with Flair banned from ringside. In the middle of the match, Ric Flair’s music played and Dana Brooke debuted from NXT distracting Natalya and giving Charlotte the match. In the following shows, Dana and Charlotte often teamed up against Natalya before Becky Lynch saved her. The two teamed up against Dana Brooke and Charlotte at MITB in a losing effort. After the match, Natalya betrayed Becky Lynch. Following Extreme Rules, Lynch and Natalya would often sabotage each other, attack each other during matches and behind the scenes.

Sasha Banks and TBD vs. Charlotte and Dana Brooke
As mentioned earlier, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks were involved in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania 32 that was won by Charlotte. Banks went on a hiatus while Charlotte went on a winning streak defending her title against Natalya, Becky Lynch, and Paige mostly due to the help of her “protegé” Dana Brooke. In June, Sasha Banks returned on an episode of Raw saving Paige from an attack by Dana and Charlotte. She challenged Charlotte to the title. In the following weeks, Banks would go on to defeat Dana Brooke two times in a week leading to Charlotte granting her a match tonight. Just not the one she wanted. Charlotte and Dana Brooke would team up against Sasha Banks and a partner that is undetermined. She has not yet found a partner yet. I would say it would be one of the NXT stars or Nikki Bella.

Darren Young vs The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
No doubt about it, Young has been treated pretty badly by the WWE and was pretty much a jobber. That is until Hall of Famer Bob Backlund vowed to “Make Darren Young Great Again” (although don’t you have to be great in the first place in order to be great AGAIN?). In his return to WWE, Young competed in a battle royal for the number 1 contender to the Intercontinental Championship, held by the Miz. The match was down to Apollo Crews, Darren Young, and Baron Corbin. Crews and Corbin were fighting each other when they both tumbled over the rope (clumsy giants) and Young won the match. He was just as surprise as we were. The weeks leading up to Battleground saw a bad feud between the Miz and Young. On Smackdown Live, in a tag team match between Young, Zack Ryder, Miz, and Rusev, Young made Miz tap out to the Crossface Chicken-Wing (his coach, Bob Backlund’s move).

The New Day vs The Wyatt Family
The Wyatt Family returned after Bray Wyatt had an injury. On their return night, the New Day interrupted their speech and proceeded to mock them. On July 4th, the Wyatt Family invited the New Day to their compound. The following week, they fought each other at the Wyatt Family compound before the New Day ran away. During the feud, Xavier Woods was visibly scared of Bray Wyatt and on Smackdown Live seemed to be in a trance in his match against Wyatt, which Wyatt won. So will it be New Day Rock or New Day Falls?

Zack Ryder vs. Rusev for the United States Championship
This feud started out really dumb. Ryder slapped Rusev in the chest and challenged him to a match for the United States Championship. Sheamus, who was still salty about Ryder beating him in the US vs. other countries match on July 4th, ambushed Ryder and challenged him to a match. After Sheamus defeated Ryder, Rusev put him in the Accolade and accepted. On Smackdown Live, Ryder and Darren Young teamed up against Rusev and The Miz. Ryder and Young won after Young made The Miz submit.

Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental Championship
The long-awaited Shield Triple Threat match is finally here. These three men dominated the WWE since their 2012 debut under the name The Shield. In 2014, Seth Rollins betrayed his “brothers” Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. After Rollins won the MITB contract, he cashed it in at WrestleMania 31 during a match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. He won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and held on to the title for more than 200 days before it was vacated due to an ACL tear at a WWE house show. In a tournament to determine the new champion, Roman Reigns came out victorious in his match against Dean Ambrose. Right after, Sheamus would cash in his MITB contract and win the title. The title transferred back to Reigns and then to Triple H in the Royal Rumble match and back to Reigns again at WrestleMania 32. At the MITB PPV, Dean Ambrose won the MITB contract and cashed it in later that night on Seth Rollins, after the latter had defeated Roman Reigns to win the title. Following the PPV, it was announced that Roman Reigns was suspended for violating the WWE Wellness Policy. Although what happened is unclear, it is believed that Reigns had abused substances. Ambrose and Rollins feuded intensely during the period and Ambrose challenged Rollins to a match on the 7/18 episode of Raw. The match ended in a double-pin (a draw), thus allowing Ambrose to retain the title. The following night, on Smackdown Live, Ambrose beat Rollins in the last match before the Battleground on a show. In a live event, Roman Reigns returned and attacked Seth Rollins.

Other news:

Randy Orton
Randy Orton will return tonight on Battleground. He will be featured on Chris Jericho’s show, “The Highlight Reel”. He will be addressing his match with Brock Lesnar at Summerslam. Let’s hope that goes well. But we’ll probably be seeing some RKOs.

Hopefully, this gets published before Battleground starts. It was a late post. But thanks for reading and be sure to watch WWE Battleground tonight on the WWE Network or any TV programs at 8 pm ET. The kickoff show will start at 7 pm ET and will be on the WWE Network and up for live streaming on the WWE Youtube channel for free.
